At the end of day two at ESL Pro League Season 5 Finals, we grabbed Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke to ask him about what North changed ahead of the event, placing first in the group, and their upcoming match in the playoffs.
With four wins, North had secured first place in the group before they played their last match with Liquid, who ended up coming out on top of the Cobblestone encounter and thus made playoffs.
In our interview at the end of day two, we asked Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke whether the fact that North had already been safe in first place affected their last match, and got his thoughts on Tomáš "oskar" Šťastný's close 1v3 attempt at 18-17 in favor of the Danes, among other topics:
Going back to your previous tournaments, you haven't been able to reach a consistently good level, what did you do differently for this tournament?
I think MSL calls a little bit different, he calls a little bit loose, so if people say what they do, they are allowed to do it, so it's not so strict anymore. And we built our game a little bit differently, so we usually end up doing tactics instead of just rushing somewhere the way we did before. And the bootcamp has helped a lot, so that's about it.
Does this have a lot to do with aizy, who has been in underwhelming form compared to his level in FaZe?
When he played in dignitas and FaZe, he was obviously very good in dignitas, he was probably the best player in the world at that time, so I think that he just needs a little bit of confidence, because he's been a bit down in FaZe as well. If he gets confidence, he'll kill everyone, and that's our team, if someone gets confident, they're just gonna destroy everyone.
Do you think the freedom you were talking about will help him, though?
I think it will help him get more kills and better stats, but I don't think the freedom will help only him, I think it helps me, Emil and cajun a lot more, because usually MSL and aizy just run together all the time, like I did before he came in. So it's gonna help us three a lot more than aizy.
Let's talk about your match against mousesports, especially with how it ended, barely saving oskar's 1v3 attempt at 18-17...
The end against mousesports should never have happened that way. I was dead, they ended up in a 1v3, I said to them "you have to run together because he has an AWP", but then they started peeking left side of the bomb and right side, then someone just started randomly smoking the bomb and defusing. We didn't talk through it, so it was a really stressful situation, and I think that's why the outcome was like that. But somehow we actually won it.
Going over to playoffs, securing a place in the semis, where you'll meet either EnVy or Liquid, does it matter who you meet in your eyes?
No, actually not, we like playing both teams and we should've won against Liquid today, so I don't really care if we meet EnVy or Liquid. I think our team is a lot better individually and tactics-wise, because we have MSL as an in-game leader. If we play against Liquid once again, we're gonna destroy them on Cobble if they pick it.
Now that you've touched on Liquid, this was a game where you didn't really have anything to play for since you had already placed first before that match, did that affect the match?
I think it affected it a little bit, because usually we do a lot of tactics and we kind of spared them, so that's gonna make it easier for us if we play against them in the semi-finals. If they meet us next time, we'll show them what's up.
It's been a while since you made a final or put up a great result. Is this the time for you to get back on track, with how your last several events went, is this the time that you win an event again, or at least get to the final?
"We have the opportunity to go to the final, and I think it's gonna build our confidence when we beat SK in the final," finished k0nfig as TACO passed by.
